Half a Million Words (A Special Writing Update)

Oh yes...

It's true...

Today I passed that milestone. I've written more than half a million words of original fiction so far this year.

I'm excited at the accomplishment, and a little apprehensive about having to edit all of this fiction. At least it will give me something to do for the next few years, lol.

What? How?!

If you're a writer and/or wondering how in the hell I managed to write this much, it was actually sort of easy:

Take it one day at a time.

At the beginning of this year, I set a goal for a daily word count. Every day I sit here and type. Sometimes I struggle to get my 2,014 words. Sometimes I crank out 10,000 and feel like I could keep going (my record so far was just over 12,000 words in a single day).

500,000 sounds like a lot, and it is, but I could not have written this much if I hadn't devoted 183 days to writing (so far). Just set a goal and do it. Even if you just wrote 250 words a day--one page--and did it every single day, you'd have a 90,000+ word novel written by the end of the year.

In fact, I may try that word count goal for next year, as this year's goal was a little... well... insane.

I suppose that's half the fun!
