Quarter Million: A Mid-Month Writing Update

Today I passed a milestone with my writing:

I've written a quarter of a million words so far this year... 251,542 words to be exact.

Out of curiosity, I looked through some of my notes and statistics to see exactly how many words this is. Since I started publishing in 2010, I've published 212,878 words of my fiction. At the end of 2013, I had 16,103 words of unpublished fiction... meaning that in the past three months, I've more than doubled the size of my existing writing.

Then I dug into the past. I've been writing since I was a kid, and I've kept copies of nearly everything (even though most of the earlier work was pretty terrible). Of what I kept, there's 44,788 words that have not been revised into modern stories. Some older stories have been revised, like The Museum Run, which we just published in Terran Shift Anthology, Vol 2: The Bio-Tech Era.

If you include those earlier stories, I wrote 273,769 words of fiction before this year started. I've been writing an average of 3,000 words a day lately, and if I keep that up plus add a few more here and there, I could quite possibly hit the end of March having written more words of fiction in the past three months than in all my prior 36 years combined.

Can I do it?

Honestly, I'm starting to feel a little fatigued. I'm neglecting many other things in my life (er, like this blog). But I'm feeling rather accomplished today. A few days ago, I finally started what will be a 9-book fantasy epic that I initially started planning in the late 1980s. I believe I can make this next milestone. But how long can all this writing last? Half a million words in half a year? A full million by the end?
